Connecticut Valley Items. Malaria has visited Deep River this fall to such an alarming extent as to be almost epidemic. Hardly a family has escaped without having it in some form. Mr. B. O. Johnson, the popular druggist, tells us that he has sold over 38,000 sulphate of cinchonidia pills, which is only one of the many remedies which he has for the relief of the disease. The Essex Gazette, a five column folio, which has been published about a year by Charles L. Howard, has finally given up the ghost. During the campaign an opposition paper was started by H. C. Newton, called the Middlesex Republican, and it has now bought the stock in trade of the old paper, and is to be anindependent weekly. Jared E. Redfield, of Essex, is on a tour through the South, to be absent several weeks. Mr. Redfield is largely interested, privately and also officially, as receiver of the defunct Townsend Savings bank; of New Haven, in the Texas, Mississippi and St. Louis railroad, of which he is president. Through his shrewd management the road has become a paying investment, and bids fair to become one of the great roads of the country. Mr. Samuel Phelps, son of Congressman James Phelps of Essex, is acting in the capacity of secretary of the corporation. On Saturday last two young men who came to Deep River by the New York boat hired a team of L. Morse, of Chester, for two hours. After driving around a spell they returned the team to the stable, paid their bill, and departed. Later in the day they came to Deep River, hired a team at E. W. Rogers' stable to go to Essex, Mr. Rogers being absent at the time. On his return, M. R's suspicions were aroused by their continued absence. He commenced a vigorous search, telegraphing to the police of the neighboring cities, and starting himself immediately for New Haven. All efforts to trace the thieves farther than Killingworth have failed as yet. The team is described in a circular got out by Mr. Rogers, as follows: "A dark chestnut mare, fifteen hands high, quite sore to lead out, but drives nearly sound. A sidebar carriage, Beecher's make, New Haven, Corning body, new this season; the nigh fore wheel has a piece split off from one of the spokes and another spoke is split in the hub the moulding on the sides of the body where you step in and out has been split off."
