PETITION AGAINST D. M. TORREY Allegations of Insolvency Against Banker by Dépositors. A petition in bankruptcy was filed in the United States District Court yesterday against David M. Torrey, trading as the D. M. Torrey Banking Company, at No. 147 Nassau street, by Frederick H. Hoffman. a creditor for $1,280, balance of money deposited between January 1, 1908, and March 23, 1910. The allegations were that Torrey was insolvent, made preferential payments of $1,000 and removed property and other assets. An attachment against Mary E Torrey and Charles Stokes was levied yesterday by the Sheriff for $1,750 in favor of James E. Willis & Son for money deposited between February 11 and March 18. The doors of the banking place were closed and a sign said: "Business suspended for the present." About a year ago Mrs. Mary E. Torrey filed a certificate of trade style, that she was carrying on the business under the name of the D. M. Torrey Banking Company. Mr. Torrey, who has been in the business of banking and as a money broker for many years, made an assignment on October 14, 1898, to Joseph Laux, his schedules showing liabilities of $12,385 and asets of $654. A petition in bankruptcy was filed against him on December 18 of the same year, and he received his discharge on March 29, 1899.
