BOSTON, Aug. 27.-Dominick McCaffery of Pittsburg, alleging grossly unfair treatment in the fight with Pete McCoy, at the theater last night, has issued a challenge. He says: "I hereby challenge Pete MoCoy to a glove competition, four or six rounds, with small gloves, Marquis of Queensbury rules, for $1,000 or $5,000 & side and gate receipts, the winner to take all; the match to be decided within six weeks in New York City, where we can both have fair play. If McCoy declines to accept the challenge I shall feel disappointed, unless I can secure & match with John L. Sullivan, whom I have heretofore barred in all my challenges, but who, after the transactions of Monday night, I am prepared to meet at any time or place for any amount of stakes he may desire." Fight in a Stable. CHICAGO, Aug. 27.-The Files-Chandler alleged prize fight occurred last night, in a livery stable on State street, in the presence of about 90 sports, who had been induced to pay Jere Dunn $20 a piece for the privilege. The contestants, Tom Chandler and Johnny Files, wore small soft gloves. It is not known what the stakes were. Four rounds were fought, in the first three of which there was much cautious sparring and little heavy work, to the disgust of the spectators, who were expectantly waiting to see gore. The fourth round opened with some hard hitting, and Chandler managed to force Files to the ropes. While in that position Files received a resounding blow on the neck that disabled him for more than the 10 seconds allowed by Queensbury rules. The fight was over in less than 15 minutes from the time it started. A National Bank Closes. XENIA, Aug. 27.-Cashier Ankeny had been engaged in grain transactions with R. M. Smart, to whom the bank, through Ankeny, recently made large advances. Smart gave a mortgage to secure this money, but the directors were not satisfied and demanded Ankeny's resignation. He went west the next day, and this caused the run of yesterday. The stockholders are regarded as able to meet all liabilities, though the amount has not yet been made public. There was & run on this bank yesterday, but payments were made so promptly that confidence was restored, and many renewed their deposits Cashier J. S. Ankeny has gone west. The bank to-day is in the hands of an officer detailed by the Controller of Currency. No statements of its condition have yet been made. The Second National Bank closed its doors this morning. No particulars. Destructive Fire. NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 27.-A Times Democrat New Iberia special says: A fire broke out at 6:30 o'clock last evening in the rear of Lehman & Taylor's wholesale dry goods house, totally destroying the building and contents, also H. Coyhanhan's residence and furniture store and a half dozen other buildings. The fire was past control at 9:30 P. M., and there is no telling when it will be extinguished. The loss will be heavy. The fire was nearing the telegraph office and the operators had to leave. The origin of the fire was accidental. Jeseph Reynolds, foreman of Fire Company No. 1, was killed by an iron shutter falling on him. No later particulars up to midnight. To Relieve Gen. Gordon. OTTAWA, Aug. 27.-The Governor General has written to the Military Department, asking for the names of some of the militia officers whose services can be obtained to take charge of a contingent of Canadian voyagers that will be sent for relieving Gen. Gordon. Preference will be given to officers who served under Wolseley in the Red River Expedition. Some French-Canadian officers will also be taken, as it is expected that a majority of the voyagers will be French-Canadians. An advertisement calling for volunteers will be issued at once. Experimenting With Torpedoes. NEWPORT, Aug. 27.-The President came ashore this morning with Secretary Phillips and Messrs. Miller and Tiffany, and made several calls. At1 o'clock the North Atlantic squadron got under way and proceeded up the bay, where the torpedo experiments and maneuvers will take place.
