CLOSING OF CITIZENS BANK AT SUPERIOR From the Jewell County Republican: The people of Jewell were profoundly grieved last Saturday to learn that the Citizens State Bank of Superior was forced to close its doors that day. Their concern lies in the fact that W. A. Matson, formerly of this place, is president of the bank. The closing of the bank was caused by rumors which started a run by the depositors. Superior has had two bad bank failures and banking conditions all over the state are badly demoralized, causing the people to be very jumpy and excitable, ready to believe any rumor that starts. A few panicky depositors scared the rest and raid on the bank started. Twenty-four years ago Mr. Matson came to Jewell and established our Citizens State Bank here, and by conservative and yet enterprising methods built one of the most sound and successful financial institutions of northern Kansas, and which then and now commands the confidence of other banks and of the people generally. His fine success here made Mr. Matson think of a broader field. Nebraska bank troubles had not yet developed, but they came on soon, following post war farm deflations and the Nebraska guaranty law, which caused the good banks to pay out nearly the amount of their capital stock in support of other banks which could not face the storm. Soon Mr. Matson's health also came near failing, in fact he went down to death's door in the Mayo hosptal. But he made splendid fight for both his life and his bank and did all that human wisdom could do to protect the interests of his associates and depositors. Some weeks ago a man of means proposed to buy into the bank. Mr. Matson told him to come and see for himself how the business was going before he bought. did and groundless rumor spread that this man was placed there by the banking de-partment. That and other false rumors caused scare that started a run and the bank was forced to close. One: thing Jewell people know and that is that there is no squarer or more trustworthy man than Mr. Matson. He has faced a terrible struggle and has lost much but he has been clean and honorable in it all as he always was when things were going his way and is just as worthy of full confidence. There is no business connection between the Jewell and Superior banks, the Jewell bank not having a dollar involved in the Superior bank. For a banker to close his bank is much like a captain who sees his ship go down at sea, but the business men have taken away much of the personal hurt by the splendid way they have rallied to Mr. Matson, assuring him of their esteem and confidence just as the Jewell folks would so gladly have done. It is quite possible that the bank may be able to reorganize and again open its doors. C. W. Medcalf, Jewell City: One thing we know about the Matsen bank, Mr. Matson may have lost money but there wasn't anything crooked about it.-Jewell County Republican.

How To Prevent Colds By the Christmas Seal Doctor. Someone who claims to be "an expert on colds" has started a great run on the baking soda can for "prevention and cure of colds.' We get a lot of inquiries. Since we have no great objection to an occasional dose of baking soda we content ourselves by telling the folks to please themselves so long as they do not use it as a substitute for common sense dressing and proper ventilation. The Christmas Seal Doctor's rules are: 1. Cultivate the "Fresh Air Habit." Let every member of the family be out of doors part of every day. Keep the bedroom windows open at night, even though closed during the day. Keep house temperatures around seventy degrees and the atmosphere moist. 2. Be sensible about protecting the body. Have a warm bed or add warmth by extra sleeping garments. Keep the feet warm. Never sit around in damp clothing or shoes. Dress to suit the weather rather than by the calendar. 3. Whether you believe colds are contagious or not avoid all coughers and sneezers. 4. Maintain a clear conscience and don't forget to pay for your Christmas Seals. The Citizens State Bank of Superior, Nebraska. was forced to close its doors, when depositors got panicky and started a run on the bank. A man with capital wanted to buy into the bank and was invited to come into the bank for ? few days and observe conditions. Someone saw the stranger there and started the story that he had been placed there by the banking department. Then the run on the bank started. Nebraska'. bank guaranty law is considered a failure and many of the largest banks have brought suit to stop the banking department from collecting assestment. to pay the losses of defunct banks. Kansas has had it, seige of banking troubles but they are now over, banking officials say. Writes From California. In remitting for subscription. Mrs. J. F. Bauman of Fresno. California, save that all their family is well and they wish their Kansas friends a Hanny end Prosperous New Year. She also sends the following clipping regarding the weather in California: "Old Sol. who has been more or less on the retired list since Thanksgiving. and has been in hiding behind 3' blanket of continous fog to the disgust of aviators and California boosters lost his grouch yesterdav and burst forth with a huge smile on Christmas day. His usual stunt of crossing un the weather forecast was repeated yesterday with a "zephyresl"touch remindful of newly spaded gardens. although it is the exact center of the California winter." Because of the bad weather last Saturday night : good many folks missed out on seeing the last chapter of the serial, "Hawk of the Hills." at the movies. Manager Fred Larkin has made arrangements to show this chapter again Saturday night. SO that folks need not be disappointed. He is also announcing some more good things in this week's advertising. O.
