INTERESTING NEWS ITEMS GATHERED FROM OUR EXCHANGE PAPERS Many Cattle Die In Frairie Fire More than 500 head of cattle perished in a prairie fire which swept over the entire southern part of Holt county. The first fire started in the vicinity of Goose lake, about 39 miles south of O'Neill, and a second swept along the edge of Wheeler county. The last fire started in what is known as Beaver Flats and where large herds of cattle were pastured. A third fire started near Amelia, in the southwestern part of Holt county. Hundreds of tons of hay were destroyed as the fire ragged over the prairie ahead of a 60 mile an hour wind. New Stratton To Open Soon The Stratton hotel, new fiftyroom structure which is under construction in Wayne, will be completed about the middle of November according to present plans. The hotel will contain fifty rooms and several apartments, besides the dining and banquet hall, offices and other rooms. Ex-governor Spoke In Hartington Ex-governor Samuel McKelvie spoke in the court house auditorium in Hartington Tuesday evening. Monte Munn, the huge athlete who alayed football with the Nebraska Cornhuskers showed slides of Belgium, Russia, Germany, Poland and the Mississ/ppi flood region when Hoover was administering to their needs in times of serious famine, after the late war and at the time of the great flood. Car Turns Turtle Near Homer A young man and his wife figured in an automobile accident at the corner near the Fegenbush place two miles south of Homer Tuesday morning. The man was driving a sport model Chrysler and was speeding along at a dangerous rate He evidently was not familiar with the road and no doubt overlooked the curve sign. The car skidded for a short distance and then turned over. The occupants crawled out of the car and found that they were unhurt. The car was soon placed upon its wheels with the assistance of other motorists. After removing all the broken glass from" the windshield and straightening the top as much as possible the man and woman got into their car, stepped on the starter and away they went. The car had a North Dakota license number. Family Has Scarlet Fever The Lyle Gamble family, who live just south of Wayne, have been quarantined because of scarlet fever. Although only the children have been sick the entire family has been quarantined to prevent any chance of a spreading of the epidemic. They have been confined to their home for more than a week, but are said to be suffering only a light attack and it is believed it will not prove serious. McLean Bank Re-Opens The McLean State Bank, which was closed on September 18th as a result of the Beemer crash, was re. opened for business last week. Stockholders and depositors have made good the $35, 000 less sustained through the operations at the Beemer bank. The depositors the depositors agreed to accept 75 per cent of their deposits, the other 25 per cent to be used in paying losses and supplying new capital. Charles Bryan To Speak Chas. W. Bryan, democratic candidate for governor of Nebraska, is scheduled to make a campaign speech Oct. 31 in the high school auditorium at South Sioux City.
