Article Text

Near Gretna the three Murphy brothers, recluse, were robbed of $1600 in bonds, which they had secreted about the farm home. Robbers at a late hour Saturday night forced their way into the home and after binding the hands of the aged bachelor brothers with wire they demanded what cash the men had. After receiving $30 in cash, the bandits searched the home and found $1600 in bonds. State authorities are assisting in an attempt to apprehend the hold up men. The statement recently made thru the press that a loan of $30,000 had been made to the receiver of the Bloomfield State Bank on securities formerly part of the assets of that institution now proves erroneous. E. H. Luikhart of the Department of Trade and Commerce has been notified that before such loan could be made from Reconstruction Finance Corporation funds the application must first be declared valid by the supreme court of the state. With no move on foot to undertake such a step further attempts at procuring these funds will not be made. One of the signs of the times is the frequency with which petty robberies are committed here, there and everywhere. It was the Buckendahl hardware store at Pierce that was marked for a loot last week. After breaking into the place, the cash drawer was rifled of $25. The Pierce Oil Station was also singled out for a small haul and after rumaging through the place the robbers took with them merely a number of flashlight batteries. The impression prevails that the robbers were scared away here before the job was completed, as the opened cash drawer was not divested of its cash.
