DESPONDENT OVER ILL HEALTH; SUICIDES Ed D. PIERCE TAKES CARBOLIC ACID AT LUCEDALE-WAS FORMER BANKER. Lucedale, Miss. Jan. 11.-Ed D. Pierce, formerly of Laurel, Miss., but who had lived at Lucedale for the last year, committed suicide here Friday by drinking two ounces of carbolic acid. He called at the Lucedale Drug Company's store and purchased two ounces of acid, and, after making other purchases at some of the other stores, among other things buying shoes for his five little children, he went home a few minutes before dinner was announced and went to his room. When he was called to dinner, being unusually slow to respond, his wife stepped into his room to see what was detaining him. She found him seated in a chair, holding the empty bottle of acid. Drs. Dorsett and Eley were summoned immediately, and reached his bedside in less than ten minutes after he had taken the fatal dose, but were unable to save his life. He died about 3 forty minutes later. C Mr. Pierce was about 55 years old. For the last fifteen years he had been prominent in South Mississippi as a business man and lawyer. For a number of years he was Southern sales manager of the Edward Thompson Publishing Company. He organized the People's bank at Laurel, Miss., and was its president until that institution failed about eight years ago. Since f that time he had been engaged in the practice of law.
