Description

Newspapers (Dec 10, 1930) report the National Bank of Greenville 'failed to open' after 'heavy withdrawals' and directors posted notice โ€” a run precipitating a suspension on 1930-12-10. No clear article confirms a later reopening or permanent closing/receivership for this specific bank. A 1931 item mentions a receiver for the First National Bank of Greenville (a different-named institution), so I do not conflate that with the National Bank herein.

BANK CLOSED IN GREENVILLE National Bank Fails to Open Doors This Morning; Blame Heavy Withdrawals GREENVILLE, N. C., Dec. 10.(AP)-The National Bank of Greenville failed to open for business today, its directors placing a notice on the door saying heavy withdrawals had made the action necessary for protection of depositors The bank, capitalized at $100,000, had deposits of $1,021,222 on September 24, the date of its last public statement J. L. Little was its president and F. J. Forbes its cashier. The decision to close the bank was reached at meeting of the directors which began last night and lasted until early today. They revealed there had been steady withdrawals from the institution for several weeks. The bank held large real estate holdings here. including handsome four-story building in which It was housed. Much of the other real estate had been taken in lieu of payments of loans made by the bank. Officers of the Greenville Bank and Trust company and the H Industrial bank, only other banking houses in Greenville, said they had had some withdrawals this morning following the closing the National bank, but that deposits were greater than withdrawals. They said they were fully prepared to meet any demands depositors might make upon them.
