Bank of Greenfield Closed on Saturday Overdraft of $20,000 by Stock Man Discovered by State Examiner Caused der to Close. The Bank of Greenfield was closed last Saturday morning order of State Finance Commissioner Cantley, the state banking department taking charge of the institution. The closing was due to irregularities in the of management the bank, an examination of the books by state bank examiner week before having disclosed an overdraft of some by Alec Jordan of Arcola, livestock buyer, without sufficient protection by collateral to protect the institution. This shortage was considered sufficient to impair capital of the bank. The matter was referred to the board of directors. who appeared to have had no previous information of the overdraft, and several of the board went to Jefferson City last week and tried to arrange with the department to be allowed to keep the bank open, but during their absence an error in the livery of a telegram, from the state banking department to the president of the bank, caused the shaky condition of the institution to become generally known and started run on the bank, the withdrawals Friday bringthe cash reserve below the danger line, when the directors that further efforts would only lessen the chance of all the depositors being paid, and turned the bank to the state, Examiner W. Noel Thorton, 58-years-old farm hand was found Monday morning beaten to death in small house occupied on the Kendrick farm six miles east and south of Leeton. It is believed that robbery was the motive of those responsible for the man's death as the house ransacked and Thorton's pocketbook was near his body. It is not believed that Thorton had much money at his place. Holt Conty: Clark and son. W. Clark, of Santa Rosa, DeKalb. County, believes in working line of that other people rather neglect. They have been specializing in buying walnuts. After they buy the they hire boys crack the walnuts, and then the Clark firm sells the kernels. How many kernels do you suppose they have sold thus far in the season Would you think it would be as much as 30 pounds, or 40. maybe 50? They had sold up to last Friday 5,000 pounds. That's 2½ tons of walnut kernels, and on last Friday they had 1,300 pounds left which they expect to sell. And that not all. They are now just getting into in good shape and expect to do a lot more business along this line.
