The board is in receipt of letters from county assessors suggesting the advisability of a convention of such assessors for the purpose of conferring and agreeing upon some basis that would bring about approximate equality in assessments and a closer conformity to law. Such a convention has been held in Indiana with excellent results. The state board has discussed the subject and the members unanimously agree in the opinion that such a meeting would result in great good. and I have been requested to address a communication to every assessor in the state. suggesting that a convention be held here at the capitol Tuesday, May 22, 1894. I hope you can arrange to attend the convention at that time. Every means at your disposal will be employed to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Stone has begun making a collection of portraits of Missouri governors, which, when completed, will be hung in the grand hall of the Executive Mansion, in the order of service. Portraits of the chief executives since the war can be easily obtained, but it will be a matter of some difficulty to procure those of some of the earlier governors of the state. but Gov. Stone will persevere in the undertaking until the collection is completed. Burr and Bondsmen Sued. The Jackson county court has taken action on the matter of the shortage charged to exist in the settlements of County Clerk M. S. Burr, and ordered suit to be brought against his bondsmen, and against him individually, to recover $16,942.81, which consists of fees not turned over to the county treasurer in settlement made in 1891, 1892 and 1893. Attempted Bank Robbery. An attempt to rob the Farmers' bank at Laclede, Linn county, was made by burglars the other night. The vault was slightly wrecked by an explosion of powder which awakened parties sleeping in the block and the robbers were frightened away before securing any booty. A Love Feast. In St. Louis the ministers of the Methodist Episcopal cburch, their wives and friends, participated in a love feast and communion service. Among those who took part in the services were Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Peachy T. Wilson. who, for fourteen years. were medical missionaries in India. Law and Order League for St. Louis. The initial meeting to form a law and order league was held in St. Louis the other evening. Prominent citizens, including ministers, were present. Burglars went through several stores in Parnell City, Nodaway county, securing money, silk goods and clothing from some of the stores. Counterfeits Circulated in St. Joseph. Several hundred counterfeit dollars have been put in circulation in St. Joseph. They are a very clever imitation of the standard dollar. Fined for Whipping a Pupil. B. W. Lyle, teacher of a country school north of Nevada, was fined five dollars and costs in the circuit court for whipping a pupil
